When Answers Are Free, Thinking Is the Inheritance

She asks the counter, not you. That’s the detail worth noticing. Four years old, one sock on, and when the moon refuses to leave the morning sky she aims the question at the cylinder next to the fruit bowl, because in her four years of empirical life, that is where answers live. The cylinder delivers. Orbits, rotation, a cheerful clause about reflected sunlight. Four seconds, maybe five. Your daughter looks at the moon, considers the official explanation, and says, “But why?” The cylinder starts over. Same answer, rearranged. It has information. It does not have a next move. The four-year-old does. She has just narrowed her eyes at an instant, fluent, perfectly confident answer and declined to be finished. Before breakfast, wearing one sock, she has demonstrated the only intellectual skill that will matter for the rest of her century. The last generation to wait Every generation of parents before this one moonlighted as the family reference desk. Your grandmother held the recipes, the birthdays, the names of plants. Your father could settle a dinner argument with an atlas, eventually, once someone found the atlas. Waiting was part of knowing. The answer came after the library opened, after the uncle called back, after the encyclopedia proved itself worth the installment plan. Information had a temperature and a travel time. Your daughter will never live in that economy. By the time she can phrase a question, the answer is ambient, the way electric light is ambient. She will never memorize a phone number. She will never wait a week to find out. She will never be more than a few seconds from a competent explanation of anything, and the explanations are getting better while you read this sentence. You’re allowed to feel the ground shift. Then look at what actually happened, because nothing was stolen. Everything was repriced. When answers were scarce, the person holding them was the valuable one. Now answers cost nothing, which means the value moved downstream, to everything that happens after the answer lands. Believing it or testing it. Skimming it or staying with it. Nodding along or narrowing your eyes. Scarcity didn’t vanish. It relocated, straight into territory no machine supplies and every family does: judgment, patience, nerve. Built to interrogate Here’s the encouraging part. The questioning instinct is not something you have to install. Children arrive with it running at industrial capacity. When researchers actually counted, in Michelle Chouinard’s landmark analysis of young children’s speech, children under five asked the adults around them roughly eighty information-seeking questions an hour, with some counts running past a hundred. And about a quarter of preschoolers’ questions weren’t requests for facts at all. They were demands for explanation. Why-questions. A preschooler is not a sponge. A preschooler is a research program with a grant that never runs out. Then watch what the environment does to the numbers. When psychologist Susan Engel’s team observed elementary classrooms and logged episodes of curiosity, questions asked, objects investigated, that intent directed gaze, kindergartners showed roughly two episodes in a two-hour stretch. By fifth grade the rate had fallen to about one every four hours. Note the dates. This collapse was documented years before any chatbot reached any classroom. Whatever flattens questioning, it is not the technology. It is environments that reward finished answers over open ones. And environments can be redesigned. You happen to run one. Hand the question back The best-studied trick in the child-language literature is almost embarrassingly simple, and it points in the same direction. Dialogic reading, developed by Grover Whitehurst’s group in the late 1980s, asks the adult to stop performing the book and start interviewing the reader. The parent prompts, the child narrates, the parent expands what the child said and hands the story back. The federal What Works Clearinghouse reviewed the evidence and found positive effects on oral language, and a 2026 meta-analysis pooling 64 studies since 2000 found a large average effect on children’s reading skills. The active ingredient was never a better answer. It is a smaller share of the talking. It is giving the question back to the person who asked it. The payoff compounds. When University of Michigan researchers followed about 6,200 American kindergartners, the more curious children scored higher in reading and math, and curiosity mattered about as much as effortful control, the sit-still-and-finish skill entire report cards are built around. The association was strongest for children with the fewest resources. Curiosity is not a boutique trait for gifted programs. It is academic infrastructure, and the cheapest place to protect it is home. As for the machines themselves, the landscape is moving fast and the kids are moving with it. In Pew Research Center’s surveys, the share of American teens using ChatGPT for schoolwork doubled in a single year, from 13 to 26 percent, and by late 2025 more than half of teens said they had used a chatbot for schoolwork help. The detail worth stealing is what teens said next. Most called it acceptable for researching something new. Most called it unacceptable for writing an essay. They are drawing lines. Unprompted, unsupervised, imperfectly, they are already running the judgment project on their own tools. The open question is whether anyone at the dinner table is running it with them. The pang is real. The job is bigger. Say the quiet part. There was sweetness in being the answer. Being asked was one of the perks, the small daily proof that you were the one who knew things, and there is a real pang the first time the counter beats you to the moon. Take a minute for the reference desk. It was a nice desk. But answers were never actually the job. What you are, and what nothing on the counter will ever be, is the person who models what happens after an answer arrives. The cylinder will never say, “Huh, I’m not sure that’s right.” It will never say “let’s find out” and mean the two of you. It will never change its mind in front of her and show its work, and it will never be visibly delighted to discover it was wrong. Those moves are caught, not taught, and there is exactly one place she can catch them. So the dinner table quietly becomes a seminar room. What do you think, asked before anyone checks. How would we know, asked like it’s a game, because it is. An adult who says “I believed that for years and it turned out to be nonsense” and grins. A child who is allowed to disagree with the most confident voice in the room and, when she’s right, watch that voice concede with pleasure. Because someday soon, the confident answer she questions will be yours. She will push back with sources. It will be mildly infuriating and it will be the whole project landing. The nerve to disagree with something confident gets its first practice on the most confident thing in the house, and if you’ve done this right, that’s you, conceding with pleasure. Ask her what she thinks the moon is doing up there. Then let her tell you something you didn’t know.
